I have been observing teachers my entire life. Both my parents were teachers in an inner city high school, 20 some odd years as a student, and now as a parent of a first grader. I’ve seen the successes, the disappointments, the frustration, but through all of that I have seen the determination, the persistence, and the dedication in most of the teachers I have encountered. I plan on striving to make those teachers proud, to show them through my actions that their hard work has not gone unnoticed and to live up to the standards expected of us as those who are entrusted with educating future generations. I will teach my content area to the best of my ability, help my students grow and mature as individuals, guide them in a direction that will lead them to become successful and productive members of society, and will keep my mind open to criticism and suggestions and never forget that as much as I teach my students they also will teach me just as much.
Through continuing study, research on teaching methods, and professional development classes, I will always be working on ways in which I can improve my teaching methods in my content area. I feel it is a mistake to assume just because we are teachers we are done learning. There is so much information out there learning can and should never stop. My content area is biology and general science and I am so enthralled with every aspect of it that I just want to express and pass on my passion to others. I am a very hands on person, I feel in love with science because of the experiments, the mystery, and due to the passion of some of my teachers. I know that not all of my students will leave with the same passion but I hope they will leave with a greater respect for the field and how it affects them. Through engaging discussions, experiments, current events and discoveries, and differentiating my instruction to meet the needs of my students, I hope to fulfill this goal.
School is a place where learning science or history is not the only important lessons that will be learned. School in and of its’ self is a society, there are different social classes, different cultures, jobs, etc, and in this society these students practice how to function in our society. As a teacher I will help them to learn how to successfully accomplish this task. Group work will help the students learn to work with others, that everyone has different opinions, and you will not always agree with or like a person, but everyone deserves to be respected and listened to. Setting classroom rules and expectations and consistently reinforcing them will force the students to start taking responsibility for their actions and realize that these actions come with consequences. That things cannot always be blamed on somebody else but that we each have control over our lives. Teaching problems solving techniques will allow my students to become confident in their ability to overcome obstacles they may encounter. That they will have the tools needed to recognize a problem, break it down, and come up with ways in which to solve it. Life is full of obstacles and decisions that require problem solving skills in order to make informed choices. Teaching reading comprehension strategies will also provide additional tools that can be used to succeed in life. Every experience in school either good or bad creates lasting impressions on the students. I want to leave only good impressions.
We go through life and expect to learn things from our bosses, our parents, books, the television, etc, but for some reason when we become adults we feel we can only learn anything valuable from other adults. We do not fell children or young adults have anything important to contribute. All I can say is that I have learned more about life and myself since I have had kids than at any other point in my life. Children and young adults have such a unique view of the world. They have been proven to be able to convey difficult concepts to others more effectively than teachers can. They can provide insight into the social aspects of the school, what they would like to learn about, how they feel we can make learning more interesting. They provide an unlimited source of teaching information that I will not pass up the opportunity to learn as much as I can from them.
I feel my teaching philosophy conveys a kind of give and take relationship with my students. In that it is my job to make my expectations clear while also discussing their expectations of me. These expectations need to be enforced consistently and equally among all the students in order for them to be effective. Though teaching various learning strategies, such as reading comprehension, problem solving skills, and how to successfully work in groups, I will not only be teaching them science but life skills that they will be able to use in order to become successful and productive members of society. I feel the only way I can become the teacher I want to be is to continually educate myself in the science field and also in the latest research and methods that arise in the education field. My goal is to become the best teacher I can be and then continually strive to become more.
